Friday, December 1 Poetry and Open Mic with feature slam poet Gabriel Gabriel Giron has been living life by his own rules since before he was born. This has caused some challenges for those around him - one early recipient being his mother Judah. After carrying him for 9 long months, Gabriel decided he didn’t want to leave the womb, causing her a 36 hour labor and an eventual delivery by cesarean. Once he arrived, he was so full of energy for the first two years that he took no naps and when he did go to sleep, he only slept for two hours at a time. This meant his mother also had to adjust to his rules and wake every two hours from 10pm – 6am. In the years that followed, he traveled different paths from exploring drugs to running away from home, from anger bouts to needing a ride after escaping a cop-crashed party – all of which tested her calm. Gabriel graduated high school in 2000 with a 2.8 GPA (she had graduated in the top 10 of her class); he decided to join the military (she is a strong supporter of peace). Then seven months into his service he was diagnosed with stage 3B testicular cancer and a new kind of adversity. After a year long battle with the disease, Gabriel triumphantly survived and in 2003 he was honorably discharged from the Army with a clean bill of health and a new-found passion for life. His perceptions about the importance of success according to society’s standards went out the window along with his decision to go to college to study Business. He is currently attending Western Michigan University and is double majoring in Creative Writing & Film, Video, Media Communications – his true passions in life. Gabriel is dedicating his first feature – to be held at Fire – to his mother, Judah, for the endless support and love he has received from her. “Through it all she has been there to offer support and guidance through the obstacles and decisions I have faced. I owe her my life, literally. I promise to make this show unique and awesome for those who show up.” Gabriel was a member of both the 2005 and 2006 Kalamazoo National Poetry Slam Team and is the current Kalamazoo Slam Champion. “I love collaborating with other artists so I’ve asked some very talented surprise guests to come out and join the show. And we’re planning to blow some people away.” doors open at 8:30pm open-mic & feature poet $3-$5 at the door Friday, December 8 Linsay Kelly, The Big Voice in Kalamazoo is back at Fire singing R&B, Folk and Blues doors open at 8:00 pm $7 at the door Saturday, December 9 Nayanna Holley with Dave Izard on piano, Aaron Tully on bass, and Ryan Andrews on drums two shows at 8:00 pm & 10:30 pm $10 at the door general admission $6 students w/ I.D. Nayanna Holley grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her introduction to music began at a very early age. At age two, she obtained her first passport and began traveling on the Michael Jackson "BAD" tour with her father, Dorian Holley. Dorian, a renowned background/studio singer in the Los Angeles area, took Nayanna along with him on the remainder of Michael's world tours, as well as tours with Rod Stewart and James Taylor. She began to study vocal jazz music at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she graduated in 2002 with Honors. During her high school career, she was a finalist in several competitions including the SPOTLIGHT Awards, the Black Experience as Expressed through Music (BEEM) Awards, the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts: Arts Recognition and Talent Search (NFAA) and she was a three time winner and one time national finalist of the NAACP's Afro- Academic-Cultural-Technological-Scientific-Olympics Competition. (ACT-SO) Nayanna was also the winner of the "Outstanding Vocalist" award in the 45th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival Competition. Nayanna attended the Musician's Institute and studied under Mike Campbell in the summer of 2001. She currently attends Western Michigan University where she is a member of the nationally acclaimed "Gold Company" vocal jazz ensemble. There, she studies under the instruction of Dr. Steven Zegree and Professor Diana Spradling. She has won several DOWNBEAT Student Awards with Gold Company and has traveled all over the world. Nayanna will graduate from Western Michigan in June of 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts: Jazz Studies, as well as a Minor in Spanish Language. shows at 8 & 10:30 pm $10 general admission & $6 for students w/ I.D. Stanley Humes Funk 211 A crazy, warped talented group of musicians of many travels. Zero egos and sworn to uphold the funk. Together about 3 years and we've been the best kept secret according to all who have seen us in action. Slowly becoming a regional favorite, our plan of attack is to hit as many major events as possible. Each member has played in various bands and projects. Experienced in many styles of music and have been "studio guys" at every level. Original material for an album is in the working and hope to release sumthin' in the very near future. So come and check out what will soon be known as Uni-ver-Soul-Luv music, it has no limits! Check out more of our music at our other website at http://artists.nfluentmusic.com/Funk211. Music has always been a prime motivator and passionate force in the life of R. Stanley Humes. Ralph's desire to be a musician led him to purchase a guitar after a summer of working. After teaching himself to play he sent out a demo tape in hopes of launching a music career. After his high school graduation he went to start a band in the Detroit area. The day this prospective band met, Ralph received a call about his demo. He was asked to go directly to the airport where a ticket would be waiting for him. Later that evening Ralph stood in Tampa Florida. He toured for the next three years and traveled all over the United States. Three years of touring gave access to a diverse section of American cuisine. Music and quality food became an intertwined force as one began to feed the other. The music not only sets the tone for cooking, it sets a mood for all who come inside. This is the reason why music is a big part of the restaurant to this very day. After the tour ended, Ralph returned home to Michigan. It was not too long before he received a call about a new band forming in Kentucky. He decided to join the band, and it was here that Ralph met his wife, Pamela. Once they were wed they moved to Atlanta. Once in Atlanta, Ralph found employment at a large gallery that specialized in wholesale art from around the world. Ralph's boss also shared a passion of food, and took him all over to eat. These experiences helped spark Ralph's passion for gourmet cuisine. During one of these experiences, Ralph's boss asked if he wanted to open a restaurant of his own. This single statement provided direction for Ralph's ambitions. He began collecting recipes and talking to chefs and the concept of opening a restaurant began to take form. It was then that Ralph decided to move back to Michigan. The Gallery gave him a job as a sales representative, something he could do from his Michigan home. However, the dream to open a restaurant had taken hold and he knew it was only a matter of time before he would go into business for himself. Ralph was doing record sales in the area, and was pulling down a high salary, but his success at work came at a high cost. Working Monday through Friday on the road meant seldom seeing his family. The desire to be with his family coupled with his desire to open a restaurant was leading toward another path. On his fortieth birthday he went for a long car ride into the country and soul searched. It was time to open a restaurant and follow his passion. Opening R Stanley's Diner was a true leap of faith. Ralph spent his last five hundred dollars the opening week on food; however, keeping to the vision and never losing faith has made something thought of as impossible blossom into the extraordinary.
